Ensuring the Health of Your Baby
As intended parents embark on the beautiful journey toward parenthood, one of the most pressing concerns is the health of their future children. Everyone dreams of welcoming a healthy baby, and at our facility, we share in that commitment. Whatever we can provide in terms of recommendations and support, we are always here to offer the most accurate and insightful guidance to ensure a successful and safe pregnancy.
Chromosomal Abnormalities and Genetic Testing
The health of embryos can first be evaluated through Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), which helps identify any chromosomal abnormalities at the embryo stage. This crucial information allows us to transfer only chromosomally normal embryos, thus improving the chances of a healthy pregnancy. However, it is important to note that PGS does not provide information regarding genetic abnormalities that may be present in the fetus after implantation.
To further assess the genetic health of the developing fetus, we recommend performing the Harmony/NIPT/Prena test. This innovative screening is specifically designed to detect potential genetic anomalies in the fetus, providing valuable insights beyond chromosomal checks.
Timing and Results of the Harmony/NIPT/Prena Test
The Harmony/NIPT/Prena test is typically performed around the 10th week of pregnancy. One of the significant benefits of this test is its efficiency—the results are usually available within two weeks. This means that by the 12th week, you will have the genetic test results in hand, coinciding with an important ultrasound known as the nuchal translucency scan. This ultrasound assesses the baby’s development by measuring the size of the nasal bone and the folds at the back of the neck. With the results of the Harmony/NIPT/Prena test ready by this critical point, you can have peace of mind knowing that the fetus is developing normally.
Recommendations for Next Steps
While the Harmony/NIPT/Prena test provides critical information, it is essential to understand that any concerning results from this test or subsequent ultrasounds may raise questions about the health of the fetus. If any tests suggest potential issues, it is highly recommended that you consider amniocentesis as the next step before contemplating the termination of a pregnancy. Amniocentesis allows for more definitive testing to understand any detected anomalies. For more detailed information about amniocentesis, please refer to our separate blog dedicated to that topic.
The Harmony/NIPT/Prena test represents a significant advancement in prenatal screening, offering parents invaluable information about the genetic health of their developing fetus. By utilizing this test in conjunction with other evaluations, you can take proactive steps to ensure the health and well-being of your future child.
